Family Portrait Photographer Northern Ireland
Real laughter, muddy wellies, an eye-roll from your almost-teenager, a proper family hug — that’s what I’m here for. No stiff poses, no forced smiles, just your family being your family, somewhere beautiful.
Book Your Family SessionIf you’ve got kids hovering somewhere between “still climbs into your lap” and “would rather die than hold your hand in public,” you already know that a traditional studio shoot can be… a lot. The stiff backdrop, the “say cheese,” the forty-five minutes of trying to get everyone looking the same direction at once. It doesn’t have to be like that.
I’m Eddy, and I’ve spent over 15 years photographing families across Northern Ireland — and pre-teens are honestly some of my favourite people to work with. They’re funny, they’re a bit sarcastic, they’ve got real personalities coming through, and that’s exactly what makes for the best photos. My job is just to be there to catch it.
What “family portrait photography” means here
You won’t find a plain grey backdrop or a “now everyone look at the camera and smile” moment in my sessions. I work in a natural, documentary style — which just means I photograph your family doing what you’d normally do, somewhere with good light and a bit of space to breathe. A handful of relaxed, guided moments (so you still get that classic “everyone looking lovely together” shot), mixed with candid ones where you’re just talking, walking, being yourselves.
Why this approach works so well for pre-teens
Ask any parent of an eleven or twelve-year-old how they feel about being told to “smile naturally” and you’ll get a very honest answer. Pre-teens can smell a posed photo a mile off, and they’ll often shut down the second it feels forced. A relaxed, documentary approach sidesteps all of that. There’s no pressure to perform — we’re just capturing what’s actually happening, which almost always looks better anyway.
It also means younger siblings and older ones can exist in the same photo without someone melting down about it. Everyone gets to move at their own pace.
What a session actually looks like
1. We start slow
No camera in anyone’s face the second you arrive. A few minutes to settle in, have a look around, let the kids run off some energy.
2. A few guided moments
Simple, relaxed prompts — walking together, a proper hug, a shared joke — nothing that feels like “posing.”
3. Mostly candid
Most of the session is just families being together while I quietly capture it — this is where the best shots usually come from.
4. A wrap-up moment
We finish with one or two classic “everyone together, looking at camera” shots for the ones you’ll want printed and framed.
Where sessions happen
I photograph families across the Causeway Coast and County Antrim — beaches, forest paths, open fields, and quieter local spots away from the crowds. If you’ve got a favourite place already (a beach you visit every summer, a walk near your house), that’s often the best starting point — familiar places tend to bring out the most natural moments. Not sure where to go? I’ll suggest somewhere based on the light, the season, and your family’s pace.
Who this is for
- Families with kids of any age, including that trickier pre-teen stage where studio photos stop working
- Milestone moments — a big birthday, an anniversary, before someone heads off to secondary school
- Multi-generational sessions — grandparents, aunts, uncles, the whole crew together
Pricing and what’s included
Your session includes a relaxed outdoor shoot at a location of your choice, guidance on timing and outfits beforehand, and a curated set of edited photos delivered digitally. Print and album options are available if you’d like something for the wall.
What makes this different locally
There’s no shortage of photographers across Northern Ireland, but a lot of family photography here still leans traditional — studio backdrops, posed lineups, everyone dressed identically. I built my whole approach around the opposite of that: real light, real locations, and real moments, with enough experience behind the camera to make it look effortless even when your ten-year-old absolutely does not want to be there.
How to prepare
Not sure what to wear or when to book? I’ve got two guides that’ll help: what to wear for outdoor family photos and the best time of year for family photos in Northern Ireland. Both are worth a quick read before your session.
From a recent family session: A mum booked us in expecting her twelve-year-old to “hate every minute of it.” Twenty minutes in, he was leading the walk and cracking jokes — some of the best photos from that shoot are the ones where nobody’s looking at the camera at all.
“We’ve tried studio photos before and it was a nightmare getting everyone to smile. This was the first time it actually felt easy.”
Frequently asked questions
How long does a family session take?
Most sessions run around 45–60 minutes — long enough to settle in and capture a good range of moments, short enough that nobody’s patience runs out.
Do you photograph indoors too?
My style is built around natural outdoor light, but I’m happy to chat through options if an indoor or at-home session suits your family better.
How far in advance should we book?
I’d recommend booking 4–6 weeks ahead, especially for weekend or golden-hour slots, which tend to fill up first — particularly in spring and autumn.
Do you travel across all of Northern Ireland?
Yes — while I’m based on the Causeway Coast, I photograph families across County Antrim and further afield. Get in touch and we’ll sort the details.
