Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Northern Ireland
There’s no single “perfect” month for family photos here — just trade-offs worth knowing before you book.
One of the first questions I get asked when a family enquires is: “when’s the best time of year to do this?” The honest answer is that Northern Ireland doesn’t hand us a perfect season — every time of year comes with something to work with and something to work around. This guide will help you pick the one that suits your family, not just the calendar.
Golden hour, explained
More than the season, it’s the time of day that does the heavy lifting. Golden hour — roughly the hour after sunrise or before sunset — gives soft, warm, directional light that’s flattering on every skin tone and age group. In summer that might mean a 6am start or an 8:30pm finish. In winter, golden hour can land conveniently around 3:30pm, right after school pickup.
Season-by-season breakdown
Spring
Fresh greens and blossom, milder crowds at popular spots, but showers can be unpredictable — good layers are essential.
Summer
The longest light window of the year and lush coastal backdrops, but midday sun is harsh — stick to early morning or evening.
Autumn
A firm favourite with clients — warm tones, dramatic skies, and colour through the forests along the Causeway Coast.
Winter
Moody, dramatic light and a shorter shoot window, but it suits cosy, layered outfits and quieter locations beautifully.
Best time of day, regardless of season
If you take one thing from this guide: avoid the middle of the day. Between roughly 11am and 3pm, the sun sits high and creates harsh shadows under eyes and noses. Aim for that first or last hour of daylight instead — it’s a bigger factor in how your photos turn out than the month you book.
Quick rule of thumb: book your session for within 60–90 minutes of sunrise or sunset, whatever season you’re in, and the light will do most of the work for you.
Weather realism for Northern Ireland
We don’t get guaranteed sunshine here, and that’s fine. Overcast days are genuinely underrated for family photography — the cloud cover acts like a giant softbox, giving even, flattering light with no harsh shadows or squinting. Light rain can usually be worked around too; a full washout is the only thing that needs a reschedule.

Newborns and young children
Flexibility matters more than ideal light. Naptimes and moods dictate more than the calendar does, so we build the shoot around your child’s routine first.
Milestone sessions
If you’re marking a specific birthday, anniversary or announcement, the date usually picks itself — we then work with whatever light and season that date gives us.
Multi-generational sessions
With grandparents and extended family, shorter, well-timed sessions in comfortable weather (spring or early autumn) tend to work best for everyone’s energy levels.

How to book around the best light
Golden hour slots on weekends fill quickly, especially through autumn. Booking 4–6 weeks ahead gives us the best chance of matching your family to the right light, location and weather window, rather than whatever’s left.
