Ballymena Family Photographer

Relaxed, natural outdoor sessions in the Glens of Antrim, Slemish, and the beautiful countryside of Mid and East Antrim

Based in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim Award-winning 2024 & 2025 15+ years family photography

Ballymena sits at the heart of some of the most beautiful countryside in Northern Ireland — and if you're looking for a family photographer in Ballymena who knows this landscape and loves working in it, you're in the right place.

Nestled between the Antrim Plateau and the rolling farmland of Mid Antrim, Ballymena is the gateway to the Glens of Antrim — a landscape of ancient woodland, dramatic gorges, and sweeping countryside that makes an extraordinary backdrop for family photography. A short drive in almost any direction opens up a location that's genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else in Ireland.

I'm Eddy Calvin, a Ballymena family photographer based in nearby Ballymoney. I've spent over 15 years photographing families across County Antrim, and the Mid Antrim area holds some of my absolute favourite spots. Whether you're drawn to the drama of the Glens, the iconic views from Slemish, or a more intimate setting closer to home, this post covers everything you need to know about booking an outdoor family session in and around Ballymena.

Why Ballymena Families Choose Eddy Calvin Photography

Choosing a family photographer is a genuinely personal decision — and I think location matters more than people often realise. Being based in Ballymoney, I'm just a short drive from Ballymena and I know this part of County Antrim well. That means I'm not working from a list of locations I've read about online; I know the light at Glenariff in late afternoon, I know the quieter corners of Portglenone Forest, and I know how the Antrim countryside looks at golden hour in October.

Beyond the local knowledge, here's what Ballymena families tell me they value most about working together:

  • A genuinely relaxed approach. Sessions feel more like a family walk than a photoshoot. I don't use rigid poses or prompts that make everyone feel awkward — I work with what's naturally happening around me and direct gently when it adds something.

  • 15+ years of experience photographing families across County Antrim — with award recognition in both 2024 and 2025 at UK and global business awards.

  • Flexible availability, including last-minute bookings where possible. Life with children rarely follows a plan — I try to accommodate that wherever I can.

  • Local knowledge you can't Google. From the best parking spots to the time of day when a location looks its absolute finest, knowing the Mid Antrim area properly makes a real difference to the finished images.

Best Outdoor Locations for a Family Photoshoot Near Ballymena

One of the things that sets Ballymena apart from the Causeway Coast is the variety of the landscape. Rather than beaches and clifftops, you have ancient woodland, mountain scenery, riverside estates, and open countryside — each with a completely different character. Here are my favourite spots for family sessions in the Ballymena area:

Glenariff Forest Park

25 mins from Ballymena

Known as the Queen of the Glens, Glenariff is one of those locations that photographs beautifully in almost any conditions. Stunning waterfalls, ancient woodland, a dramatic gorge — the scale and variety here is hard to match anywhere in Northern Ireland. The drive alone is worth it, and the images you take home will look unlike anything from a coastal session. Particularly spectacular in spring and autumn.

Slemish Mountain, Co. Antrim

10 mins from Ballymena

An iconic landmark steeped in the story of St Patrick, Slemish sits dramatically above the Antrim countryside with sweeping views in every direction. Sessions here have a genuinely atmospheric quality — wide, open, with that sense of being somewhere significant. It's not a gentle stroll so families with very young children tend to use the lower fields, but for adventurous families it's an outstanding choice.

Galgorm Estate & the River Maine

5 mins from Ballymena

Beautiful riverside and estate grounds just on the edge of Ballymena itself. Lush greenery, elegant natural surroundings, and accessible for all ages — this is one of those locations that photographs beautifully without requiring much walking. Perfect for families with toddlers or anyone who wants a stunning setting without the drive to the Glens.

Portglenone Forest

20 mins from Ballymena

Beautiful mature woodland on the banks of the River Bann. Portglenone has a quieter, more intimate feel than Glenariff — dappled light through the canopy, wide forest paths that are easy underfoot, and a peacefulness that lets children relax quickly. One of the most reliably lovely woodland settings in Mid Antrim, and accessible year-round.

The Antrim Plateau & Countryside

On your doorstep

Sometimes the most memorable images come from the simplest settings. Open fields, stone walls, hedgerows, and the rolling hills of the Antrim plateau have an authenticity that more famous locations can't always match. There's something genuinely County Antrim about this kind of session — earthy, honest, and quietly beautiful.

A Meaningful Local Spot

Your choice

A favourite park, a farm where the children love to run, a garden that means something to your family — personal always beats generic. Some of my favourite sessions have been in places that would never appear on a photography location list, but that tell the story of a particular family in a way that nowhere else could. If you have somewhere in mind, let's talk about it.

If you're further along the coast and closer to Portrush or Coleraine, I have dedicated posts on family photography around Portrush and family sessions in the Coleraine area that cover the coastal locations in more detail.

What to Expect from a Family Photography Session Near Ballymena

First-time clients often tell me they were more nervous than their children on the day — and that within 15 minutes, everyone had forgotten there was a camera at all. That's exactly how it should be. Here's how a typical session works:

1

Before the Session

Once you book, you'll receive a welcome guide along with a style guide tailored specifically to woodland and countryside settings around Ballymena — what colours work beautifully in the Glens, what footwear makes sense for forest paths, how to prepare children for the session. We'll also work together to shortlist the right location for your family, taking into account the ages of your children, your preferred feel, and the time of year.

2

On the Day

Sessions run for 60–90 minutes. The pace is child-led and relaxed — we move through the location naturally, pausing for loose family groupings when the moment is right, and letting the children explore, run, and be themselves the rest of the time. The best images come from genuine moments. I'm there to notice them, not manufacture them.

3

After the Session

Your edited images are delivered via a private online gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you can download your images directly, share with family, and explore the wall art and print packages available if you'd like something beautiful for your home. Heirloom prints made from real sessions in the Antrim countryside are something else entirely.

What to Wear for an Outdoor Family Photoshoot Near Ballymena

Woodland and countryside sessions call for a slightly different approach to coastal ones. You're working with the earthy tones of the Glens, the autumn colours of Glenariff, the greens and browns of Portglenone — and what you wear can either complement that landscape beautifully or compete with it. Here's what I recommend:

Earthy tones work beautifullyWarm greens, deep rusts, ochre, soft browns, and cream complement the woodland and countryside of the Glens perfectly. Think autumn palette.

Coordinate, don't matchA cohesive palette looks natural and modern. Coordinated tones across the family look intentional; identical outfits can feel stiff and dated.

Practical footwearForest floors and hillside paths call for sturdy shoes, boots, or wellies — not smart shoes. Comfort on the day produces better images.

Layer for the Antrim climateMornings and evenings in the Glens can be genuinely cool even in summer. Bring a lightweight jacket — it can always come off for images.

Dress children for movementThe best images come from children who feel free to roam. Comfortable, practical clothing for little ones every time.

A personalised style guideEvery booking includes a style guide tailored to your specific location — so you'll have bespoke advice, not generic tips.

All ages work beautifully outdoors. Toddlers and young children thrive in natural settings where they can explore freely — some of the most genuine, joyful images I take come from little ones who have completely forgotten there's a camera. Older children and teenagers relax much more naturally outdoors than in a studio. And there's no age that doesn't photograph beautifully against the Antrim countryside. Bring the dog too, if you have one.
