Few places in Ireland stop people in their tracks the way Portrush does. Whether it's the limestone arches at White Rocks catching the last of the evening light, the wide sweep of East Strand at low tide, or the wild Atlantic horizon stretching out past the harbour — Portrush has a quality to it that makes every photograph feel special. Which is exactly why, as a Portrush family photographer, I never get tired of shooting here.
My name is Eddy Calvin and I'm based in Ballymoney — just ten minutes from Portrush — and I've been photographing families on this coastline for over 15 years. In that time I've learned where the light falls best, which stretch of beach suits which kind of family, and how to get genuine, natural images even when the toddler has decided they want absolutely nothing to do with the camera. Which, I can assure you, happens more often than you'd think.
In this post I'll walk you through everything you need to know about booking a family photography session in Portrush — from the best beach locations and what to wear, to how a session actually works and how to get your date secured.
Why Portrush is One of the Best Places in Ireland for Family Photography
I've photographed families at locations across Northern Ireland and beyond, and Portrush consistently produces some of the most extraordinary images. There's a reason photographers from across Ireland make the trip to the Causeway Coast — the combination of landscape, light, and sheer variety is hard to match anywhere on the island.
The beaches are genuinely world-class. White Rocks, East Strand, and West Strand each have a completely different character — dramatic rock formations and golden sand at White Rocks, wide open space and easy access at East Strand, and a quieter, more sheltered feel at West Strand. Depending on your family, the time of year, and the mood you're after, each one offers something different.
The light over the Atlantic is extraordinary. There's something about the quality of coastal light on the North Coast — particularly in the hour before sunset — that simply can't be replicated anywhere else. It's warm, directional, and endlessly flattering. Golden hour at White Rocks is one of the most beautiful things I get to experience regularly as a photographer.
Children thrive at the beach. This might sound obvious, but it's worth saying: kids are completely in their element by the sea. They splash, explore rock pools, chase waves, and dig in the sand — and in doing so they forget entirely that there's a camera nearby. That's when the real magic happens.
"There is nowhere on this island quite like the Causeway Coast at golden hour. To photograph a family there — laughing, playing, completely themselves — is one of the great privileges of this job."
The Best Locations for a Family Photoshoot in and Around Portrush
Portrush and the surrounding coastline offer more variety than most families realise. Here are the locations I return to most often for family sessions in the area.
White Rocks Beach
The crown jewel of the Portrush coastline. Dramatic limestone arches, golden sand, and a horizon that stretches all the way to Scotland on a clear day. Non-negotiable for golden hour sessions.
East Strand, Portrush
Wide, accessible, and right in the heart of Portrush. Brilliant for families with prams, young toddlers, or anyone who wants the convenience of town without sacrificing the scenery.
Portrush Harbour & Coastal Walk
A more intimate, characterful setting than the open beach. The harbour walls, the rugged coastline path, and the town's distinctive architecture give these sessions a completely different feel.
Dunluce Castle Coastline
One of Ireland's most dramatic coastal landmarks, perched above the sea just minutes from Portrush. Spectacular as a backdrop for adventurous families who want something truly striking.
Portstewart Strand
Miles of uninterrupted golden beach backed by dunes, with the River Bann meeting the sea at the far end. Quieter than Portrush on busy days and utterly beautiful at any time of year.
Your Own Choice
A spot that means something to your family will always produce more meaningful images. Whether it's a garden, a favourite walk, or somewhere with family history — let's talk about it.
Tide times, parking, and seasonal conditions all factor into which location will work best on your session day — and I take care of all of that in the planning stage. You don't need to think about any of it.
What to Expect from a Family Photography Session in Portrush
A beach session in Portrush sounds wonderful in theory — but I know the reality can feel a little daunting when you're picturing a toddler mid-meltdown on a windswept beach. Let me paint you a more accurate picture of how sessions actually go.
Before the Session
Once you book, I'll send you a welcome guide with everything you need to know before the day. I'll check tide times for your chosen beach, monitor the weather forecast in the days leading up to your session, and send a personalised style guide tailored to the coastal setting — so you arrive feeling prepared rather than panicked. If anything looks likely to affect the session, I'll be in touch well in advance.
On the Day
Sessions typically run for 60 to 90 minutes. We'll meet at the beach and I'll ease everyone in at a natural pace — a walk along the shoreline, the kids exploring the sand, parents enjoying a rare moment of just being together without a to-do list in sight. I'll offer gentle guidance throughout, but I'm mostly following your family rather than directing it. Paddling is encouraged. Running is encouraged. Sitting quietly and staring at the camera is actively discouraged.
After the Session
Within two to three weeks, you'll receive your private online gallery — fully edited and ready to download, share, or print. I also offer a range of wall art and framed prints for those who want their images on the walls at home, where they belong.
What to Wear for a Beach Family Photoshoot in Portrush
The Portrush coastline has its own colour palette — sandy whites, pale greys, deep blues, and the occasional burst of golden light. Outfits that sit within that world will always look the most natural and timeless in print.
- Coastal neutrals work beautifully — whites, creams, oatmeal, soft blues and sandy tones all complement the beach setting without competing with it
- Coordinate, don't match — pick a two or three colour palette and let each family member wear their own version of it. It looks far more relaxed and contemporary than identical outfits
- Layer up for the seafront breeze — a light linen shirt, an open knit cardigan, or a casual jacket adds texture and keeps everyone comfortable on the North Coast
- Bare feet or wellies on the beach — both photograph beautifully; smart shoes that fill with sand do not
- Dress the kids for play — if they want to paddle, let them paddle. If they want to dig, let them dig. The best beach images always involve children doing exactly what children do
- Avoid large logos and busy prints — these distract the eye and tend to date faster than simple, clean clothing
As always, I'll send a personalised style guide when you book — with specific advice tailored to your chosen beach location and the time of year.
The Best Time of Year for a Family Photoshoot in Portrush
Every season on the Causeway Coast has something to offer — but some times of year are particularly special for family photography on the Portrush beaches.
Spring & Autumn — The Sweet Spot
These are the most popular seasons for beach sessions on the North Coast, and for good reason. The light is warm and low, the skies are frequently dramatic, and the beaches are quieter than in the height of summer. Autumn in particular produces a quality of late afternoon light on White Rocks that I find genuinely difficult to describe — you have to experience it to understand why families travel from across Ireland to shoot here at this time of year.
Summer — Long Evenings, Endless Golden Hour
Northern Ireland's summer evenings are extraordinary. Golden hour can stretch past nine o'clock, meaning an early evening session in June or July gives you hours of that warm, dreamy light on the beach. Portrush in summer also has an energy about it — the seaside town at its most vibrant, the beaches busy with life — that translates beautifully into family images.
Winter — Dramatic and Atmospheric
Winter sessions on the Portrush coast aren't for everyone, but for those who love a dramatic, moody aesthetic — the stormy skies, the powerful Atlantic waves, the deep saturated greens and greys of the landscape — winter here is genuinely stunning. Wrap everyone up warmly, choose a sheltered beach like East Strand, and you'll end up with images unlike anything else.
A Note on Tides & Weather
For beach sessions, I always check tide times in advance and plan the session timing around the best conditions. If the weather forecast is looking rough in the days leading up to your session, I'll be in touch. Reschedules happen with no fuss and at no additional cost — the North Coast weather is part of the charm, but it's not worth fighting against.
Areas Covered Near Portrush
Portrush sits at the heart of a stretch of coastline I know well and photograph regularly. If you're based anywhere on the North Coast or in the wider Causeway Coast area, I'd love to work with you. I regularly photograph families in Portstewart, Coleraine, Bushmills, Ballymoney, Ballycastle, Armoy, and across County Antrim.
For sessions within around 30 miles of Ballymoney there are no travel fees. Beyond that a small travel supplement may apply — just let me know where you're based when you get in touch and I'll be upfront about any additional costs from the start.
