Belfast is a city that surprises people. Most visitors expect the murals, the history, the famous hospitality โ and they get all of that. What they don't always expect is how quickly the city gives way to genuinely beautiful natural landscape. Cave Hill looms over the north of the city like a guardian. The Lagan valley stretches south into quiet, green countryside. Tollymore Forest is an hour away. And for families living here, that access to natural beauty is one of the best reasons to choose outdoor photography over a studio session.
My name is Eddy Calvin, and I'm one of Northern Ireland's most sought-after family photographers serving Belfast and the greater Belfast area. Based in Ballymoney on the North Coast, I travel to Belfast regularly to work with families who want something different โ relaxed, natural, and genuinely beautiful rather than posed and predictable.
In this post I'll walk you through the best outdoor locations for family photography in and around Belfast, what to expect from a session, and how to get your date secured.
Why Belfast Families Choose Eddy Calvin Photography
Belfast has no shortage of photographers. So why do families choose to work with me, and why is it worth the journey from the North Coast?
The approach is genuinely different. Most photographers working in Belfast operate from studios or lean heavily on posed, structured shoots. My sessions are the opposite โ documentary in nature, child-led in pace, and completely relaxed in execution. Parents tell me consistently that they expected a photoshoot and got a family walk instead. That's not an accident. It's the whole philosophy.
The results speak for themselves. Twice recognised as Northern Ireland's best family photographer โ in 2024 and 2025 โ I bring the same level of care and craft to a session in Botanic Gardens as I do on the Causeway Coast. The location changes. The standard doesn't.
I know Belfast's best outdoor locations. Cave Hill at golden hour. The Lagan towpath in autumn. Barnett Demesne on a still morning. These are places I've photographed in every season and every light condition, and knowing exactly when and where to be makes an enormous difference to the quality of the images your family comes home with.
"Belfast families often tell me they didn't realise how beautiful their own city could look until they saw their photographs. That's one of the things I love most about shooting here."
The Best Outdoor Locations for Family Photography in Belfast
Belfast and the surrounding area offer far more variety for outdoor family photography than most people realise. Here are the locations I use most often for family sessions in and around the city.
Cave Hill Country Park
The iconic hill that gave Belfast its skyline. Sweeping views across the city and Belfast Lough, beautiful woodland on the lower slopes, and a sense of space that's hard to find elsewhere in the city. Stunning at golden hour.
Barnett Demesne & Minnowburn
Beautiful National Trust parkland on the south side of the city, with mature woodland, open meadows, and riverside paths along the Lagan. One of Belfast's best-kept secrets for family photography.
Botanic Gardens
Classic, central, and genuinely lovely โ particularly in spring when the flower beds are in full colour. A great option for families who want something accessible and close to the city centre without sacrificing the greenery.
Lagan Towpath
The riverbanks and towpath stretching south from the city offer beautiful, varied scenery โ water, woodland, and open paths. Quiet even on weekday afternoons and genuinely beautiful in autumn light.
Colin Glen Forest Park
A surprisingly beautiful urban forest park on the west side of the city, with a river gorge, mature woodland, and waterfall. Far less visited than Cave Hill, which means quieter sessions and a more intimate feel.
Tollymore Forest Park
One of Northern Ireland's most photographed forests โ ancient trees, stone bridges, and the Shimna River running through it all. Worth the drive for families who want something truly spectacular, especially in autumn.
Not sure which location suits your family best? I'll always help you choose based on where you live in the city, the ages of your children, and the style of images you're drawn to. Just mention these things when you get in touch.
What to Expect from a Family Photography Session in Belfast
Whether this is your first professional family session or you've had mixed experiences before, here's exactly what working with me looks like โ from the moment you book to the moment your gallery arrives.
Before the Session
Once you book, I'll send a welcome guide covering everything you need to prepare โ outfit advice, how to talk to younger children about the day, what to bring, and how the session will unfold. You'll also receive a personalised style guide tailored to your chosen Belfast location and the time of year. If there's anything the guide doesn't cover, I'm always happy to chat things through before the day.
On the Day
Sessions run for 60 to 90 minutes. We'll meet at your chosen location โ a park, a woodland, a hilltop โ and ease in naturally. A walk, some exploring, the kids doing what they do. I'll offer gentle guidance when it helps and step back to capture the real moments the rest of the time. The session ends when it feels like we have everything โ not when a timer goes off.
After the Session
Your fully edited private online gallery arrives within two to three weeks. Every image is carefully processed and ready to download, share, or print. Wall art and framed print packages are available for families who want to put their images where they belong โ on the walls at home.
What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot in Belfast
Belfast's parks and green spaces have their own colour palette โ deep greens, earthy browns, and the soft grey-blue of the Lagan and Belfast Lough on the horizon. Outfits that sit naturally within that world will always produce the most timeless images.
- Neutral and earthy tones โ soft greens, warm creams, dusty blues, and earthy browns all work beautifully against Belfast's parks and woodland backdrops
- Coordinate, don't match โ choose a palette and let each family member wear their own piece of it. It looks far more natural than identical outfits
- Dress for the outdoors โ Belfast parks involve uneven ground, grass, and the occasional muddy path. Practical shoes and comfortable clothing always photograph better than anything too formal
- Layer up โ Belfast weather is variable at any time of year. Layers add texture to images and keep everyone comfortable during the session
- Dress children for freedom โ kids who feel free to run and explore produce far better images than kids who are trying not to get their clothes dirty
- Avoid busy patterns and large logos โ these distract the eye and date the images faster than simple, clean clothing
A personalised style guide tailored to your chosen location arrives with your booking confirmation โ so you'll have plenty of time to plan everything in advance.
Areas Covered in and Around Belfast
I serve the whole of the greater Belfast area โ North, South, East, and West Belfast, as well as the surrounding suburbs and commuter towns. Whether you're in Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Holywood, Bangor, Carryduff, or Dundonald, I'd love to hear from you.
For families who'd like to travel to the North Coast for their session โ and many Belfast families do, particularly for the beaches and the Glens of Antrim โ I'm very happy to arrange that too. There's something special about getting out of the city for a session, and the Causeway Coast is worth every mile of the drive.
