Best Dog-Friendly Walking Spots in County Antrim
Forest trails, glens and coastal paths — County Antrim has some of Northern Ireland’s best dog walks, and some of its best photo backdrops too.
A photoshoot doesn’t have to mean a studio, or even a beach. Some of the most natural dog photographs come from somewhere your dog already knows and loves — their regular walk, just with better light and a bit more intention behind where you stop.
Here are the County Antrim spots I come back to again and again for dog photography, and what makes each one work.
Glenariff Forest Park
Waterfalls, mossy boardwalks and dappled light through the trees make this one of the most photogenic forest walks in the Glens. The Waterfall Walkway is short enough for older or less energetic dogs, while the wider forest trails suit a longer, more active session.
The Gobbins, Islandmagee
A dramatic cliff-edge path with bridges and tunnels over the sea — stunning as a backdrop, but note that dogs aren’t permitted on the guided Gobbins path itself. The surrounding coastal approach still offers great photo opportunities.
Slemish Mountain
Wide open hillside with sweeping views across County Antrim — ideal for action shots of a dog running with real space around them. Exposed and can be windy, so best on a calmer day.
Glenarm Forest and Castle grounds
A gentler, more manicured setting with a river running through it — good for a calmer, more portrait-style session, especially with older dogs or nervous ones who prefer a quieter pace.
What makes a location work for photos, not just walks
- Varied light — a mix of open and covered areas means we’re never stuck shooting in harsh midday sun.
- A clear background — trails with dense clutter behind them make it harder for your dog to stand out in the frame.
- Space to move — the best shots often come from your dog running, not posing, so room matters more than scenery.
- A pace your dog is used to — a completely new environment can make some dogs too distracted to settle; a familiar walk with a new eye on it often works better.
Not sure where to start? Tell me about your dog’s usual walk and temperament, and I’ll suggest a spot and time that suits them — sometimes the best location is the one they already know.
Common questions
Are dogs allowed off the lead in the Glens of Antrim?
Most forest trails allow dogs off the lead where they’re under close control, but livestock fields and nature reserves usually require leads year-round. Always check signage at the entrance, since rules can vary by site and season.
Which County Antrim walk is best for a first dog photoshoot?
Glenariff Forest Park is a great starting point — varied light through the trees, a waterfall backdrop, and paths gentle enough that neither you nor your dog will be too worn out to enjoy the shoot afterwards.
Do you travel to these locations for a dog photoshoot?
Yes, I’m happy to travel anywhere along the Causeway Coast and Glens of Antrim. If you have a favourite walking spot that means something to you and your dog, that’s usually the best choice — it tends to produce the most natural, relaxed photos.
